Gizditch Ranch Fieldtrip

What a fun trip! I am so thankful for the organization that planned it. We has such a fun time. The Gizditch Ranch in Watsonville was so much fun and we'd love to go back!

We walked through the apple orchards and picked a few apples. We learned about apple rust and how its good for you and the apples. We learned there is a difference between eating apples and baking apples. We also learned about Johnny Appleseed and how he traveled the USA planting apples, selling seeds, communicating with the natives, and giving seeds to people in need.

According to Gizditch apple info. There is health benefits to apples (which we all know but here is the 411):

"For Your Health

Antioxidants

Did you know apples are a great source of natural antioxidants called procyanidins? The antioxidants benefit vascular function and have anticoagulant activity similar to that of aspirin and the natural pectin in apples tends to lower bad LDL cholesterol (Finland's National Public Health Institute). More concentrated in the skin than the pulp, so eat the skin. *1 ½ cups of 100% pure apple juice or 2 fresh apples a day slows the oxidation process of the "bad" LDL cholesterol* Also contains phytonutrients (active plant components).

BERRIES are also very high in antioxidants and four of the top 10 fruits and vegetables are blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries. Antioxidants also help reduce inflammation, keep arteries flexible, and preserve the genetic material every cell contains to prevent mutation.
Cancer cells forget how to die; they just continue to grow (American Health Foundation). Raspberries and strawberries have a chemical called ellagic acid that kills cancer cells by reinstituting their ability to die."
